Successful submission of the ´LIFE+ Back to the Foix´ EU project
June 12, 2018 | Abertis Foundation
The UNESCO International Center for the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves provided funds for the writing of a project proposal under the EU´s LIFE financial instrument, which was successfully submitted last Tuesday, 12th of June.
The project aims to reach the ´good quality´ status of the Foix reservoir waters, according to the standard set by EU Water Framework Directive. The reservoir is located just in front of Castellet Castle, i.e. the UNESCO Center´s headquarter. Decades of intensive human activities upstream led to the accumulation of an excess of nutrients and sediment at the bottom of the reservoir, which nowadays is classified as the most hypereutrophic in Catalunya.
The Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at Autonomous University of Barcelona will coordinate the project, in collaboration with the Catalan Water Agency (ACA); the Barcelona´s Provincial Government (DIBA); the Freshwater Ecology, Hydrology & Management group (FEHM) at University of Barcelona; and the Catalan Agricultural Research and Technology Institute (IRTA)
