The Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve Network (MedMAB) was established in 2015 and was officially recognised as a thematic network of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in 2023.
UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserves serve as learning laboratories for sustainable development, offering spaces to test interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing the complex interactions between social and ecological systems.
The MedMAB Network brings together 72 biosphere reserves from 16 Mediterranean countries, aiming to become a multi-shore network that contributes to balancing human well-being and nature in Biosphere Reserves and beyond, enhancing socioecological resilience in a context of global change.
The Network upholds core values such as tolerance, equity, solidarity, and inclusion, and promotes adaptive management based on respect for people, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. These principles are fully aligned with the mission of the UNESCOMED Centre, which coordinates the Network’s Technical Secretariat, and plays a key role in fostering applied research, capacity building, knowledge transfer, and the exchange of experiences.
