2nd International Day of Biosphere Reserves

Maricarmen Romera,

From the UNESCOMED Center for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves and the Abertis Foundation, we want to celebrate the second International Day of Biosphere Reserves, established by UNESCO with the aim of calling the attention of the world population on the approach to sustainable development, and the outstanding and exemplary role that the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program and the World Network of Biosphere Reserves can play on it.

With this video, we also want to celebrate that 2023 has been the year in which UNESCO has officially recognized the MedMaB Network as a UNESCO Thematic Network, undoubtedly the result of the joint and continuous work of the biosphere reserve managers, members of the UNESCOMED Center since 2015. Let these images of some of the 74 reserves belonging to 17 Mediterranean countries that are part of the MedMaB Network serve as a tribute to all the biosphere reserves, people and institutions that have made it possible to get here, contributing to make visible the opportunities offered by biosphere reserves to the Mediterranean territories in a scenario of profound Global Change.

For the UNESCOMED Center and the MedMaB Network, 2023 has been a crucial year. In the last managers' meeting, the first Strategic Plan of the MedMaB Network was approved and a few months later it was formally recognized by the ICC as a UNESCO Thematic Network, the third worldwide at present.

We hope you like it! Happy Biosphere Reserves Day!
